New Delhi, May 15 (NationPress) Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah has approached the Supreme Court challenging an order from the Madhya Pradesh High Court that mandated the registration of an FIR regarding his contentious comments about Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.

In suo motu proceedings, the Madhya Pradesh High Court instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to initiate a criminal case against Shah under Sections 152, 196(1)(b), and 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) within a strict timeframe of four hours, warning the DGP of contempt proceedings for any delays.

A bench comprising Justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Shukla stated that there were sufficient grounds to consider that Shah's remarks promoted enmity among various castes, religions, and languages.

The bench, led by Justice Sreedharan, indicated that referring to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi as the “sister of terrorists” constituted an offense that injured the sentiments and beliefs of the Muslim community.

In the context of Operation Sindoor, Vijay Shah remarked on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sent a “sister from the same community” as those in Pakistan to retaliate against the April 22 terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

“PM Modi is striving for society. Those who left our daughters widowed in Pahalgam, we sent a sister of their own to teach them a lesson,” Shah stated.

The derogatory comments about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had been actively involved in media briefings during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, sparked widespread indignation across the nation.

In response to the backlash, the minister expressed remorse and stated that he holds the Armed Forces in high regard, referring to Colonel Sofiya as “sister.”

“I, Vijay Shah, am not only ashamed and saddened by my recent statement that has hurt the feelings of every community, but I also apologize sincerely. Our nation’s sister Sofia Qureshi ji has worked above caste and societal lines while fulfilling her national duty,” he shared in a video message on the social media platform X.

In his petition submitted to the Supreme Court, Shah is seeking to annul the FIR as well as the suo motu proceedings initiated by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
