Bhopal, May 15 (NationPress) The Congress intensified its critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the controversial remarks made about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi by Madhya Pradesh's Tribal Affairs Minister, Kunwar Vijay Shah, sparking widespread outrage across the country.
Congress MP and party's General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal, targeted the BJP, questioning why the Minister, who insulted Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, has not been dismissed even after the Madhya Pradesh High Court's directive to file an FIR against him.
"From the Madhya Pradesh Minister who insulted Colonel Sofiya Qureshi to Godse-bhakt Pragya Thakur, it is evident that no matter how many toxic, anti-national statements you make, there are no repercussions within the BJP," Venugopal stated in a post on social media platform X.
The Congress General Secretary further remarked, "The decision not to remove Minister Vijay Shah, against whom the High Court has ordered an FIR, signifies a tacit approval of his statements. We will persistently urge the BJP to take action against him; they have no alternative."
Earlier on Wednesday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court acknowledged the issue and directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to file an FIR against Minister Shah by the evening.
Following this, Minister Shah was charged under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and other relevant allegations by late Wednesday evening.
Justice Atul Sreedharan of the Madhya Pradesh High Court cautioned that non-compliance would result in proceedings under the Contempt of Courts Act.
Meanwhile, State BJP President V.D. Sharma, who convened a closed-door meeting with Minister Vijay Shah at the party headquarters late on Tuesday, spoke to the media on Wednesday, stating, "The BJP leadership has taken this matter seriously, and he (Vijay Shah) has been informed of the party's stance."
Three former Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh -- Digvijaya Singh, Kamal Nath, and Uma Bharti from the BJP -- have condemned Vijay Shah's remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, calling for his dismissal.
"Vijay Shah must be removed from his ministerial position, and an FIR should be filed against him immediately for bringing dishonor to the nation," Uma Bharti expressed in a message on social media platform X.
