Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 19 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, has urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to issue an apology to the public for his inaction on a complaint filed in 2024 regarding the alleged violent assault on a pregnant woman and her family by police officers.
Satheesan stated that the Chief Minister, who also oversees the Home portfolio, was aware of the incident but chose to remain silent, allowing the situation to be covered up.
“If the Chief Minister was informed and did nothing, that signifies a serious failure. If he was unaware, then what is the point of holding that position?” he questioned.
The Opposition leader claimed that this incident unveiled the harsh reality of the Kerala Police under the administration of Pinarayi Vijayan.
According to Satheesan, the police had arrested the woman's husband over a minor issue, detained him at the police station, and subjected him to severe physical abuse.
Upon arriving at the police station with her children, the pregnant woman was also reportedly attacked after she protested against the assault on her husband.
Describing the situation as unprecedented, Satheesan remarked that a police officer assaulting a pregnant woman accompanied by her children was unimaginable.
He alleged that it was only when the matter reached the court that it gained public attention.
“Hardly a fraction of what occurs inside police stations becomes known to the public,” he stated.
Satheesan called for a thorough investigation into the incident and accountability for those involved.
He also requested an inquiry into whether any individuals from the Chief Minister's Office or senior police officials intervened to shield the offending officers.
Claiming that police misconduct and corruption had become commonplace during the current administration, Satheesan alleged that even senior police officials were facilitating parole for serious criminals in return for bribes.
Once regarded with great respect, the Kerala Police have significantly deteriorated under the existing government, he asserted.
Mentioning previous allegations of police misconduct, including an incident involving a Youth Congress leader in Thrissur, Satheesan indicated that the assurances provided by the Chief Minister in the Assembly had not been upheld, accusing the CPI(M) and the Chief Minister’s Office of protecting culpable police officials.
Meanwhile, the police officer, Prathapachandran, who was involved in the assault on the pregnant woman, has been suspended. The victim stated that her family plans to seek justice through the legal system, as other police officials also demeaned her.
The case gained attention recently after a video of the assault emerged and circulated widely.
