Mumbai, July 12 (NationPress) Vivek Kumar Gupta, a distinguished officer of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) from the class of 1988, has assumed the role of General Manager (GM) of Western Railway as of Saturday.
Before taking on this significant responsibility, he served as the Managing Director of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the entity tasked with the implementation of India’s inaugural Bullet Train Project.
Gupta’s extensive experience includes his tenure as Principal Executive Director/Gati-Shakti at the Railway Board, Ministry of Railways. In this capacity, he orchestrated the integrated operations of seven departments—Civil (Works, Project Monitoring & Station Development), Electrical (RE), Signal & Telecommunication, Traffic, Finance, Planning, and Economic Directorates—ensuring a unified approach to the planning and execution of major railway initiatives, including station development under the PM Gati-Shakti scheme.
Throughout his career, Gupta has held key positions on both Western and Central Railways, including Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), Chief Track Engineer, Chief Bridge Engineer, and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).
In these roles, he oversaw vital infrastructure projects such as new line construction, gauge conversion, doubling and multi-tracking initiatives, along with traffic facilities and bridge maintenance.
As Chief Engineer at the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), Gupta was instrumental in coordinating and executing the MUTP I, II & III projects, which collectively amounted to approximately Rs 20,000 crore.
He also spearheaded preparatory efforts for the Rs 34,000 Cr MUTP 3A project, involving extensive collaboration with various organizations including the World Bank, AIIB, MMRDA, CIDCO, and the government of Maharashtra.
During his time as DRM of the Bhusaval Division of Central Railway from April 2019 to August 2021, Gupta focused on enhancing operational efficiency while prioritizing safety, reliability, infrastructure improvement, staff welfare, customer satisfaction, and both expenditure control and revenue generation.
