Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan will embark on a two-day official visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands beginning Saturday, 8 August, participating in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyaan' and a series of events commemorating India's freedom movement, according to an official statement.

Day One: Cellular Jail and the Light and Sound Show

On the first day of the visit, the Vice President will tour the Cellular Jail National Memorial at Sri Vijay Puram, where he will pay tributes at the Martyrs' Column and offer respects at the Swatantrata Jyoti. He will also visit Veer Savarkar's Cell, one of the most evocative sites in India's colonial history. In the evening, Radhakrishnan will attend the iconic light and sound show that chronicles the saga of India's independence struggle and the sacrifices of its freedom fighters.

August 9: Flag Hoisting and Tiranga Concert

On 9 August, the Vice President will participate in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyaan' by hoisting the National Flag at Flag Point in Sri Vijay Puram. He will subsequently attend the state function — the 'Tiranga Concert on Vande Mataram' — at the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) Auditorium. In the afternoon, Radhakrishnan will visit the historic Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, named after the legendary freedom fighter.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands carry deep historical significance as the site of the Cellular Jail, where the British colonial administration imprisoned and tortured hundreds of Indian freedom fighters. Last month, Radhakrishnan unveiled the statue of social reformer and freedom fighter Mannathu Padmanabhan and inaugurated the Mannam Smrithi Mandapam at the Mannam International Centre in Delhi, at an event organised by the Nair Service Society. Addressing the gathering, he described Padmanabhan as 'one of modern India's greatest social reformers and nation-builders.' Recalling Padmanabhan's contributions, Radhakrishnan said the reformer 'dedicated his life to the upliftment of society through education, social reform, self-reliance and community service.' He added: 'He believed that every human being deserved equal dignity and equal opportunity. His life's work reminds us that genuine social progress is possible only when justice, compassion and inclusiveness become the guiding principles of society.'
