Was the Attempted Bombing of Protesters in Western Australia an Act of Terror?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sydney, Feb 5 (NationPress) Authorities confirmed on Thursday that an attempted bombing targeting a large gathering of protesters in the capital of Western Australia (WA) in January is now classified as an act of terror. WA Premier Roger Cook announced during a press briefing that the police have determined the bombing attempt was driven by a racist and hateful ideology, marking the alleged perpetrator as the first individual in the state's history to face charges related to a terrorist act.
The 31-year-old suspect was apprehended shortly after he allegedly hurled a suspected homemade explosive device into a crowd of thousands participating in a protest led by Indigenous Australians on Australia Day, January 26.
According to police reports, the individual took the device from his bag and threw it from an elevated walkway into a gathering of over 2,000 demonstrators during the Invasion Day protest in Perth. Thanks to a vigilant member of the public, law enforcement quickly took the man into custody, and bomb response units examined the device, as stated by the Western Australia Police Force.
Initially, the suspect faced charges for making or possessing explosives under suspicious conditions and for endangering the life, health, and safety of others.
On Thursday, Cook revealed that ongoing investigations warranted the incident to be classified as a terrorist act, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
"We must denounce this incident in the strongest possible terms," he stated. "This attack was motivated by a racist and hateful ideology."
Authorities had previously disclosed that the device contained ball bearings, screws, and an unidentified liquid in a glass container, designed to explode upon impact.
Cook warned that if the device had detonated as planned, it could have resulted in a mass casualty event.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch stated that there was no prior intelligence indicating that such an attack was in the works.
