Kolkata, Nov 4 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police has issued a warning to women regarding fraudulent profiles on matrimonial platforms, which are often used by cybercriminals to perpetrate their schemes.
In light of this, authorities are urging women to exercise caution before engaging emotionally.
Recently, the Hooghly Rural Police dismantled a significant cyber-fraud operation that exploited matrimonial sites, according to reports from the police.
The investigation revealed that using fake identities, emotional manipulation, and false marriage proposals, the gang managed to deceive at least 20 women out of approximately Rs 3 crore.
Authorities have taken three individuals into custody in connection with this case.
The issue came to light when a 29-year-old woman from the Singur area of Hooghly filed a complaint. She had met a man on a matrimonial site who claimed to be Anupam Roy, a mill owner from Burdwan.
Claiming to live a lonely life due to deceased parents and lacking close family, he gradually gained her trust through online chats. In January, he informed her that his bank account was frozen due to tax issues and urgently needed financial assistance.
Thinking she was assisting her future husband, the woman, along with her mother and grandmother, transferred funds into a specified bank account.
Initially, a forged deposit slip from a public-sector bank was provided as proof of repayment. However, as demands for more money continued, Anupam Roy evaded video calls, citing poor connectivity. The woman's growing suspicion led her to contact the police.
Hooghly Police stated, "When this case first landed on our cyber detectives' desks, it appeared to be a standard cyber fraud. However, we were unaware that it involved the emotions of at least 20 women in a much deeper scheme."
The police noted that Anupam's profile vanished from the matrimonial site, and his phone number became unreachable.
On July 3, a 32-year-old model named Abhishek Roy was apprehended. He owned one of the five accounts that received the funds. Following his lead, authorities arrested Zahir Abbas (41) within a week, and ultimately, the gang's ringleader, Jamir Abbas (31), was captured on October 14 while hiding in a resort in Mandarmani.
The police indicated that this group utilized stolen photos and videos of South Indian models to create fake profiles on matrimonial sites, presenting the facade of a wealthy, attractive, and respectable partner.
"This operation extended across Burdwan, Howrah, Tarakeswar, and even Delhi, generating a total of Rs 3 crore. Approximately 20 young women fell victim to this scam. We urge the public to exercise caution when using matrimonial platforms," stated the police.
