West Bengal's Railway Budget Surges to Rs 14,205 Crore for 2026-27
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
West Bengal's railway funding has surged more than threefold, reaching Rs 14,205 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27, as reported by officials in Guwahati on March 11 (NationPress). The Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, noted that the average annual budget allocation for the state from 2009 to 2014 was approximately Rs 4,380 crore. This significant increase showcases the current Central government's dedication to elevating West Bengal's railway infrastructure. According to Sharma, this heightened investment is facilitating extensive infrastructure advancements throughout the state. Currently, railway projects valued at about Rs 93,000 crore are in progress in West Bengal. These initiatives encompass the construction of new railway lines, redevelopment of stations, enhancements in safety measures, and the expansion of railway capacity, all aimed at boosting connectivity across the region. Sharma emphasized that the development of railways in West Bengal has historically been sluggish, with numerous projects lingering incomplete for years and modernization efforts lacking momentum. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, West Bengal has become a pivotal hub for the substantial transformation occurring within Indian Railways. This transformation is paving the way for improved connectivity, enhanced safety, greater passenger convenience, and expanded economic prospects. To enhance the passenger experience, railway stations across West Bengal are undergoing redevelopment through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. A total of 101 railway stations have been earmarked for redevelopment at an estimated investment of around Rs 3,600 crore, designed to upgrade passenger amenities and modern infrastructure, effectively transforming them into urban centers for surrounding locales. So far, redevelopment initiatives have been completed at nine stations, including Anara, Barabhum, Haldia, Joychandi Pahar Junction, Kalyani Ghosh Para, Kamakhyaguri, Panagarh, Siuri, and Tamluk. Among these, the upgraded stations at Joychandi Pahar Junction, Kalyani Ghosh Para, and Panagarh have already been inaugurated. These revamped stations feature improved waiting areas, better lighting and signage, digital information systems, spacious circulating areas, food courts, parking facilities, separate entry and exit points, lifts and escalators, as well as enhanced sanitation services. In terms of connectivity, modern train services have significantly expanded in the state. Currently, one pair of Vande Bharat Sleeper Express operates from West Bengal, complemented by 18 Vande Bharat Express and 22 Amrit Bharat Express services linking major cities and economic centers. These trains offer expedited and more comfortable travel, reducing journey times while strengthening connections between commercial hubs and tourist spots, as highlighted by the CPRO. West Bengal has also seen considerable growth in its railway network; the official indicated that since 2014, nearly 1,400 km of new railway tracks have been established in the state, surpassing the entire railway network of the United Arab Emirates. Remarkably, railway electrification has progressed impressively, with approximately 1,712 km of rail routes electrified since 2014, achieving 100 percent electrification of the state’s railway network. To bolster safety and facilitate train movement, over 500 rail flyovers and underpasses have been constructed. The indigenous train protection system 'Kavach' has been deployed over 105 route kilometers in the state, with work ongoing on another 1,041 km. Approval has also been secured for implementation across 3,200 route kilometers, as stated by Sharma. The NFR CPRO also mentioned that West Bengal is poised for additional railway infrastructure enhancements. Redeveloped stations at Kamakhyaguri, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum, Anara, and Siuri will soon be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Furthermore, the third railway line between Belda and Dantan, along with the Automatic Block Signalling project connecting Kalaikunda and Kanimahuli, will be dedicated to the nation. A new express train service linking Purulia and Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi will also be launched, establishing a vital rail connection between West Bengal and the national capital. These comprehensive initiatives signify a new era of railway development in the state, expected to spur economic growth, trade, and social connectivity. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), headquartered in Maligaon near Guwahati, operates throughout the Northeastern states as well as in several districts of West Bengal and five districts of northern Bihar.
