Kolkata, Nov 25 (NationPress) A woman was taken into custody on Tuesday for allegedly drowning her three-month-old grandson in a pond located in the Domjur region of Howrah district, West Bengal, according to police reports.
The distressing incident occurred in the morning, prompting an investigation to determine the underlying reasons for this tragic event, officials stated.
A senior officer from the Howrah Rural Police revealed that the suspect, identified as Sarithi Banerjee, confessed to the act during questioning, admitting that she had thrown her grandson into the water, resulting in his death.
"The reasons behind her committing such an atrocious act remain unclear. Efforts are ongoing to uncover the motive for this crime," the officer confirmed following her arrest.
According to the police, the child's father, Abhijit Banerjee, works night shifts. His wife, Moyna Banerjee, had invited her mother to their home to avoid spending the night alone with their newborn.
On Sunday, Moyna and her mother visited her family home for some errands. Later on, Moyna returned with Abhijit’s mother, Sarithi, to help care for the baby. For the following two days, the infant was under his paternal grandmother's care.
Moyna came back home on Tuesday morning and was alarmed to find her child missing from the bed. In a panic, she called out for help, prompting neighbors to rush over, initiating a search for the baby.
About an hour and a half later, the child's body was discovered floating in a nearby pond. Authorities at the Domjur police station were alerted immediately. The police arrived, retrieved the baby, and rushed him to Domjur Rural Hospital, where doctors pronounced the three-month-old dead upon arrival.
After the incident, suspicions arose regarding Sarithi, who had been responsible for the child's care for two days.
Faced with pressure from Moyna and the neighbors, Sarithi admitted to throwing the child into the pond. The police arrested her, and an investigation is currently in progress.
