Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 7 (NationPress) A man has been taken into custody for allegedly strangling his only specially-abled son and subsequently burying him in the Burdwan district of West Bengal, as reported by police on Saturday.
This tragic event occurred in the Memari area of East Burdwan district.
The suspect, named Sonalal Mandi, was apprehended on Friday night.
Residing in Mandalgram, under the jurisdiction of the Memari police station, this heartbreaking incident has sparked fear within the community.
According to law enforcement, Surya Mandi, Sonalal's son, was blind from birth and faced severe mobility challenges. The family struggled to provide adequate care for him due to his special needs.
After Surya's mother abandoned him shortly after his birth, he briefly lived with his maternal grandmother. Following her death, the responsibility for Surya fell to his paternal grandmother. Police indicated that from that point onward, Sonalal began to view his son as a burden.
Community members revealed that Sonalal initially sought to place his son in an orphanage. When those attempts failed, he resorted to plotting his son's murder.
"On the previous Wednesday, Sonalal took Surya to the shores of Kaldighi Lake in the Barapalashan area of Memari. He then strangled his son and buried him there. The following morning, locals discovered the child's body on the bank, exposed as water from the lake washed away the grave," stated a senior officer from the East Burdwan district police.
Local residents promptly alerted the Memari police.
Authorities arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and transported it to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy.
During the investigation, Sonalal Mandi was detained and subsequently confessed to the murder, leading to his arrest.
The police have filed charges against Mandi.
