Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) Women in India have transitioned from merely obtaining small loans to actively influencing the nation’s credit landscape by engaging in retail and business lending, stated NITI Aayog CEO Nidhi Chhibber.
A recent report from NITI Aayog has underscored a significant evolution in women’s interaction with the formal credit framework.
Entitled “From Borrowers to Builders: Women and India’s Evolving Credit Market,” the report indicates that women are reaping the benefits of the expansion in digital public infrastructure and structured financial systems.
During the report's unveiling, Chhibber emphasized that economic advancement is bolstered when a broader spectrum of individuals engages more effectively in markets.
“Economic prosperity flourishes when market participation becomes more extensive, profound, and efficient,” she noted.
Chhibber elaborated that the report's findings illustrate how women are increasingly defining and gaining from these transformations.
“Crucially, women borrowers are progressing beyond foundational credit to retail and business-oriented lending, signifying enhanced financial competence and deeper economic integration,” she articulated.
The report disclosed that women borrowers in India currently possess a credit portfolio worth Rs 76 lakh crore, representing 26% of the total system credit.
This indicates a remarkable increase from Rs 16 lakh crore in 2017, with overall credit exposure surging 4.8 times during this interval.
The population of women actively utilizing credit has also seen steady growth, with a compound annual growth rate of 9% projected between 2017 and 2025.
Developed under the Women Entrepreneurship Platform of NITI Aayog in partnership with TransUnion CIBIL and MicroSave Consulting, the report offers an in-depth analysis of women's progression within the credit landscape.
It integrates extensive credit bureau data with insights gathered from rural women entrepreneurs.
Anna Roy, who also heads the Women Entrepreneurship Platform, remarked that the growing scale and diversity of women's credit utilization signify a substantial transformation in India's economy.
