Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 9 (NationPress) Padma Shri recipient Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane commended the Women’s Reservation Bill on Thursday as a significant and courageous reform. She called upon women nationwide to engage in politics actively and embrace their role in nation-building.
As the Parliament's Budget Session resumes on April 16, the foremost agenda will focus on discussing proposed changes to the Women's Reservation Act, 2023 (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam), also referred to as the Constitution (One Hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act.
In a recent video message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for unified support from all political factions for the Women's Reservation Bill.
In her conversation with IANS, Deshmane praised Prime Minister Modi for championing this long-overdue reform, asserting that this initiative signifies a robust commitment to women-led development.
“Let me start with a wonderful slogan — if PM Modi is present, everything is possible. This historic Bill had been pending for far too long. The decision made by Prime Minister Modi and his Cabinet is undeniably bold,” Deshmane shared with IANS.
She asserted that while the Bill is an initial stride, its effectiveness will hinge on women taking charge and making their presence known in the political sphere.
“It is now the responsibility of the women in our nation to step up, engage in politics, and ensure it is fully effective. I urge young, energetic women to come forward, participate in politics, and aid in nation-building,” she stated.
Deshmane pointed out that this legislation will greatly enhance India's democratic structure by ensuring a higher representation of women in legislative bodies.
“This is a crucial step that will increase the number of seats for women in Parliament, which is essential for our democratic framework. Democracy relies on numbers. Thus, this decision will undoubtedly empower women and hasten the nation's advancement,” she noted.
Commending the government's broader initiative toward women-led progress, she expressed that the Bill offers a “golden opportunity” for women to assume leadership positions and influence the country's trajectory.
“This is our response to a Prime Minister who advocates for women-led development. I extend my gratitude to the Central government, especially to Modi ji, for taking such a visionary initiative. He has accomplished remarkable things during his administration,” she added.
The Women’s Reservation Bill aims to allocate one-third of seats in both Parliament and state legislatures to women, a move that is widely regarded as a transformative measure toward inclusive governance and gender equality.
