Is a Report on the Proposed Yamuna Water Transfer from Haryana to Rajasthan Coming Soon?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) A detailed project report (DPR) is expected to be ready in the coming months regarding the initiative to transfer Yamuna water from Haryana’s Hathnikund Barrage to Rajasthan, aimed at alleviating the summer drinking water crisis, as indicated by documents from the Jal Shakti Ministry.
Both Haryana and Rajasthan have established Task Forces to collaboratively prepare the DPR for this river water transfer, utilizing underground pipelines over a four-month period each year, from July to October, according to official documents.
The districts in Rajasthan anticipated to benefit from this proposed Yamuna water sharing include Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu.
“Rajasthan has contracted a consultant for DPR preparation via a work order issued on July 25, 2025. The consultant is expected to complete the DPR within six months,” the document stated.
Previously, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Haryana and Rajasthan to jointly develop the DPR for the water transfer project.
Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil mentioned in an earlier statement that the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) allocated a total of 577 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) of Yamuna water to Rajasthan from July to October, sourced from the Hathnikund Barrage.
“During the period from November to June, no water is allocated to Rajasthan from Hathnikund Barrage,” he noted, addressing concerns that the water transfer initiative might impact water availability in adjacent states.
“According to the MoU, Phase-1 of the proposed project includes the transfer of water through underground pipelines from July to October, up to 577 MCM for drinking water supply and other necessities of Rajasthan districts, after full utilization of the Western Yamuna Canal (with a capacity of 24,000 cusec) by Haryana, including Delhi’s share at Hathnikund Barrage,” Paatil stated.
