Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Nov 7 (NationPress) A young man, known as Deepak Pradhan, tragically lost his life when a tractor allegedly ran over him while he was protesting against illegal sand smuggling in Mundai village, located within the Jaintgarh OP jurisdiction of West Singhbhum district on Friday, as reported by officials.
This incident sparked significant anger among community members, who took to the streets and staged a demonstration, laying Deepak's body on the road for several hours.
Furious locals shouted slogans directed at the sand mafia and the police, accusing them of colluding with illegal miners.
Residents claimed that unlawful sand mining and transportation have persisted in Mundai and surrounding areas for an extended period, with minimal intervention from law enforcement or the mining department.
According to the villagers, Deepak had been a staunch opponent of illegal activities and was “specifically targeted” for his resistance.
“He regularly stopped sand-laden tractors and reported their activities. This is why he was killed,” asserted a local.
High-ranking police officials arrived on the scene and promised stringent action, which led to the lifting of the road blockade.
Deepak's body was subsequently sent to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The tractor involved in this incident has been confiscated, although no arrests have yet been made.
Avinash Kumar, the in-charge of Jaganathpur Police Station, stated that a thorough investigation is underway.
“Initial inquiries indicate that Deepak Pradhan was attempting to halt the vehicle when the incident occurred, resulting in his tragic death. We have seized the tractor and are examining all possibilities,” he said.
However, local residents rejected the police's “accident” narrative, asserting that Deepak was murdered by the sand mafia.
They alleged that numerous tractors illegally transport sand every night from the riverbanks in the locality, and despite numerous complaints, authorities have remained inactive.
“The administration is ignoring the situation. Illegal sand mining occurs right under the noses of the police and mining officials. If the perpetrators are not arrested and illegal mining does not cease immediately, we will escalate our protests,” cautioned a villager.
