Garhwa (Jharkhand), Nov 12 (NationPress) The alarming incident involving sand smugglers allegedly attempting to run over a Block Development Officer (BDO) with a tractor in the Garhwa district of Jharkhand has sparked fierce political backlash from opposition factions.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, Babulal Marandi, has vehemently criticized the state government regarding this matter.
Marandi took to social media on Wednesday, accusing the Hemant Soren-led administration of safeguarding the sand mafia, asserting that under their governance, “honesty has become a crime punishable by death.”
“BDO Shravan Kumar was on Untari Road in Garhwa district investigating illegal sand mining when the mafia attempted to run him down with a tractor. Thankfully, the BDO and his team managed to escape, but despite police presence at the scene, no action was taken against the perpetrators,” Marandi alleged.
He further criticized the government for its inability to protect its officials.
“If government officials cannot feel safe, how can ordinary citizens expect to be protected? Who is accountable for the safety of BDO Shravan Kumar? When law enforcement aligns with the mafia and criminals, who will serve justice to the public?” the BJP leader questioned.
This incident occurred late Monday night in Sidha village within the Untari Road police station jurisdiction.
During a late-night inspection aimed at combating illegal sand mining, BDO Shravan Kumar attempted to stop an unregistered tractor.
Instead of halting, the driver allegedly accelerated, directing the vehicle straight at the officials.
Though the officer and his team narrowly evaded disaster, the speeding tractor crashed into a nearby hut, injuring cattle tied there.
Police arrived shortly after and managed to stabilize the situation.
The following morning, the BDO, along with the station house officer, re-evaluated the site.
Police officials confirmed that raids are underway to apprehend those involved.
“We are taking action against the suspects,” a police official stated.
