Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 11 (NationPress) A 22-year-old unemployed young man from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has been detained by the Delhi Police Special Cell concerning alleged online radicalisation activities associated with various social media platforms, as reported by officials on Saturday.
The individual has been identified as Sheikh Imran, also known as S.K. Imran, the son of Sheikh Amir and a resident of Ganga Nagar in Bhubaneswar, according to a joint press release from Suresh Dev Datta Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate.
Sheikh Imran was arrested on April 10 in the Unit-6 area, with the support of the Commissionerate Police.
This arrest follows a larger operation by the Delhi Police Special Cell, which had previously taken into custody a group of young individuals in Delhi related to "social media posts on platforms including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Signal that pertained to radicalisation."
During the interrogation of these suspects, investigators reportedly uncovered a connection leading back to Odisha.
Following this lead, the police apprehended Sheikh Imran.
Further questioning disclosed that Sheikh Imran, an unemployed young man, was an active participant in the radical group.
Authorities indicated that through Sheikh Imran's social media accounts, he established contact with a tight-knit group on WhatsApp and Signal, where "radical content based on religious ideologies was being disseminated, posing a threat to national security."
Officials noted that Sheikh Imran was taken into custody after collaborative efforts between the Delhi Police and local authorities. He was later presented before the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Court in Bhubaneswar and was placed on transit remand by the Delhi Police for further inquiries.
The press release underscored that the investigation was initiated after an analysis of the online activities of those detained in Delhi revealed the Odisha-based connection.
Sheikh Imran is currently in custody as investigators continue to delve into the extent of the alleged network and its digital footprint.
