Why has Delhi Police booked Gurpatwant Singh Pannun over Republic Day threats?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 23 (NationPress) The Delhi Police have filed an FIR against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the leader of Sikh for Justice (SFJ), for purported threats aimed at inciting unrest in the capital as the nation prepares for Republic Day celebrations on January 26.
Officials have confirmed that the FIR was filed by the Special Cell of Delhi Police under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically Sections 196, 197, 152, and 61. These sections pertain to criminal conspiracy and actions that jeopardize the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India, among other offenses that threaten national security.
According to police sources, this action was prompted by a video circulating on social media in which Pannun allegedly made threats directed at Delhi surrounding Republic Day. In this video, he claimed that pro-Khalistan posters were being displayed in areas like Rohini and Dabri via so-called sleeper cells.
However, after conducting searches at the indicated locations, the Special Cell reported that no such posters have been discovered to date. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the video's origin and the motivation behind Pannun's statements.
In a related event, India expressed strong disapproval of the trespassing incident at the Indian Embassy in Croatia, where Khalistani activists vandalized the national flag. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged that those responsible be identified and held accountable.
This development is the latest in a series of actions by Khalistani groups against Indian diplomatic missions overseas. While most incidents have previously occurred in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the incident in Croatia has sparked renewed concerns. The Indian Embassy in Zagreb was targeted just days before the upcoming India-European Union Summit set for January 27.
A video posted online by Pannun depicted a Khalistani activist allegedly breaching the embassy grounds in Zagreb, removing the Indian flag, and substituting it with a Khalistan flag, reportedly on January 22.
“We denounce the trespassing and vandalism at our embassy in Zagreb, Croatia, by anti-India elements,” the external affairs ministry stated in a release that did not specifically mention Khalistani activists or Pannun.
In the video, Pannun indicated that this act was conducted in anticipation of Republic Day, accompanied by further incendiary comments. He was observed against a backdrop featuring images of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which he asserted that New Delhi would be a 'target' on January 26.
India has repeatedly voiced its concerns to authorities in nations including Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US regarding the actions of SFJ and Pannun, designated as a terrorist under Indian law. These actions encompass violent protests, vandalism of Indian missions abroad, and threats against Indian diplomats.
