Is the Yunus government compromising national interests with the Chattogram port deal?

Dhaka, Feb 4 (NationPress) Renowned economist Anu Muhammad has criticized the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus for allegedly engaging in activities detrimental to national interests. Local reports indicate that the government is expediting plans to sign a long-term concession agreement with DP World, a UAE-based port operator, to manage the New Mooring Container Terminal at Chattogram Port.
He contended that the interim government lacks both authority and jurisdiction to finalize such agreements and is proceeding with undue haste and coercive tactics.
Speaking at a solidarity rally outside the National Museum in Shahbagh, Dhaka, Anu Muhammad stated that those elected in the upcoming February 12 parliamentary elections should be responsible for publishing a white paper explaining the rationale behind the interim government's agreements that could be against the country's interests.
"They must also hold accountable those responsible for these actions. It is imperative that the individuals within the government involved in these activities are not permitted to leave the country," the economist was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
Anu Muhammad pointed out that the NCT lease agreement is being pursued amidst irregularities, a lack of transparency, and neglect of public and national interests.
He asserted that handing over control of the terminal to a foreign entity would significantly reduce the revenue and fees generated from the facility.
Furthermore, he noted that tariffs on all goods were raised shortly before this agreement, which would inflate both import and export costs, negatively impacting the nation's economy.
The economist claimed that multiple agreements are being made with a lack of transparency, irrational decision-making, and in violation of existing laws.
"By appointing lobbyists disguised as advisors and special assistants, Yunus has effectively integrated advocates for foreign companies and states into this government," he added.
Earlier on Tuesday, workers and staff at Chittagong Port initiated an indefinite work stoppage in opposition to the interim government's decision to lease the port's New Mooring Container Terminal to DP World.
During a press briefing, coordinators of the Chattogram Bandar Rakkha Sangram Parishad, Mohammad Humayun Kabir and Ibrahim Khokon, declared the work stoppage outside the port building.
After three consecutive days of an eight-hour work stoppage starting Saturday, the protesters escalated their actions to a 24-hour work stoppage on Tuesday morning.
Before the protests concluded, the demonstrators announced an indefinite work stoppage, further intensifying the ongoing stalemate.
"Our officials are being detained in Dhaka, and efforts are being made to compel them to sign the agreement. Given this situation, we cannot ease our protest. Thus, we have resolved to continue our movement indefinitely," Ibrahim Khokon was quoted by the prominent daily Prothom Alo.
