The Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) serves as the government’s flagship program, offering health coverage of Rs. 5 lakh for each family annually for secondary and tertiary hospitalization needs, benefiting 12 crore families from the economically disadvantaged 40 percent of India's population.
As of October 31, 42.31 crore Ayushman cards have been issued under this scheme, according to Prataprao Jadhav, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.
“By October 31, the total number of claims settled reached 2.02 crore, amounting to Rs 28,732.18 crore for the previous financial year,” he continued.
The Minister highlighted that in March 2024, the eligibility criteria were broadened to include 37 lakh Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), Anganwadi Workers (AWW), Anganwadi Helpers (AWH), and their families.
The scheme has also been extended to cover 6 crore senior citizens aged 70 and above from 4.5 crore families, regardless of their socio-economic status, via the Ayushman Vay Vandana card.
“More than 41.34 lakh Ayushman cards have been issued for the ASHA/AWW/AWH categories, and 89.51 lakh cards have been distributed under the Ayushman Vay Vandana category for senior citizens,” Jadhav added.
Additionally, the Minister noted that there are currently 1,80,906 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), formerly known as Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs), operational across the country as of October.
These centres offer essential services such as comprehensive screenings for five prevalent non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, oral cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer.
“According to the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) portal, screenings have reached 38.79 crore for hypertension, 36.05 crore for diabetes, 31.88 crore for oral cancer, 14.98 crore for breast cancer, and 8.15 crore for cervical cancer at Sub-Health Centres (SHC) and Primary Health Centres (PHC) in urban and rural regions, including AAMs, by October 31,” Jadhav stated.
Moreover, teleconsultation services are available at all operational AAMs nationwide, allowing individuals to access specialist services closer to home and addressing challenges related to physical accessibility and provider shortages.
“As of October 31, 41.14 crore teleconsultations have been conducted at AAMs,” the Minister concluded.
