How Does Gautam Adani View the Group’s Pact for 5,000 MW Projects in Bhutan?

New Delhi, May 8 (NationPress) Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani announced on Thursday that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the collaborative development of 5,000 MW of hydropower projects in Bhutan signifies a strengthening of the group’s partnership with the Himalayan nation.

He expressed gratitude to Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay for placing his trust in the Adani Group.

Prime Minister Tobgay, in response, expressed his delight at the progress made by the Druk Green Power Corporation and Adani Power on the Wangchhu hydropower joint venture project, announcing the signing of the MoU with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop an additional 5,000 MW of hydropower in Bhutan.

"I am grateful to my friend Gautam Adani," remarked Prime Minister Tobgay.

This partnership is strongly endorsed by both the Bhutan and Indian governments, reflecting a mutual vision for clean energy advancement and economic integration.

The MoU was signed in Bhutan by DGPC’s Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Naresh Telgu, COO of Adani Green Hydro Ltd, in the presence of PM Tobgay, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Lyonpo Gem Tshering, and other prominent dignitaries. This agreement builds upon the ongoing collaboration for the 570/900 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project, where DGPC will hold a majority 51 percent stake while the Adani Group will possess 49 percent. The wider 5,000 MW initiative will include additional hydropower and pumped storage projects, which will be identified and implemented in phases.

DGPC's MD Rinzin stated, "This strategic partnership with Adani will further enhance our solid engagement with the Government of India in leveraging Bhutan’s abundant hydropower resources, a cornerstone of our exemplary and friendly relations between our two countries." He expressed optimism about advancing this partnership with Adani and learning from their extensive global successes.

In another significant development, DGPC and the Adani Group also signed the Shareholders’ Agreement for the Wangchhu Project, marking crucial progress in their efforts to develop Bhutan’s hydropower sector.

The Adani Group, a leading player in infrastructure and renewable energy in India, offers substantial expertise in project development, financing, and market access, aiding Bhutan in increasing its hydropower capacity and establishing connections to Indian energy markets.

This collaboration guarantees reliable power delivery and integration with India’s commercial power markets, reinforcing Bhutan’s role in regional energy trade.

This initiative aligns with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, aiming for an additional 20,000 MW of generation capacity by 2040. The roadmap prioritizes diversification into solar and geothermal energy and promotes strategic partnerships to attract investment and innovation.
