How Can AI Enhance India’s Blue Economy?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 19 (NationPress) Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to significantly enhance India’s maritime management, disaster response systems, marine livelihoods, and the overall blue economy, according to experts speaking on Thursday.
This insight emerged during a panel discussion titled ‘AI for Oceans of Tomorrow: Data, Models and Governance’ at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held here.
The Director General of Meteorology at the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Dr. M. Mohapatra, emphasized in his keynote address the critical importance of oceans in regulating climate, mitigating disaster risks, ensuring food security, and supporting livelihoods.
He pointed out India's robust capabilities in ocean observation, cyclone forecasting, marine data systems, and early warning services.
“Technological innovations have dramatically minimized loss of life and property during extreme weather events,” he remarked.
Dr. Mohapatra also underscored the necessity of data-driven and AI-integrated models as essential complements to traditional physical models, particularly in tackling the escalating effects of climate change such as ocean warming, acidification, and rising sea levels.
During the session, Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, highlighted the growing collaboration between India and Norway in the realms of oceans and the blue economy.
She noted that when AI is crafted on open, interoperable, and trustworthy digital foundations, it can vastly improve fisheries management, shipping efficiency, port operations, and coastal resilience.
Stener added that India’s leadership in digital public infrastructure positions it favorably to aid in constructing a global digital ocean framework based on open data, shared standards, and responsible digital governance.
“Such a framework would not only benefit India but the global community as a whole,” she stated.
Panelists observed that India is uniquely situated to spearhead the Global South by developing digital ocean infrastructure that integrates open data, AI-driven intelligence, and solid governance frameworks.
They emphasized that AI will be pivotal for enhancing marine livelihoods, lowering operational costs, and facilitating timely, data-informed decision-making across all sectors of the blue economy.
