Is Amazon Really Laying Off 16,000 Employees Globally?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 28 (NationPress) The e-commerce powerhouse Amazon announced on Wednesday that it would be terminating 16,000 employees worldwide as part of "additional organizational changes."
This marks the second significant round of layoffs within the company in about three months, coinciding with the rise of AI technologies.
Beth Galetti, the Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, stated, "We are implementing additional organizational changes across Amazon that will affect some of our team members."
In a blog post, she acknowledged that "this is challenging news, which is why I’m sharing what’s happening and why."
Galetti further elaborated, "As I mentioned in October, we have been focused on enhancing our organization by streamlining layers, promoting ownership, and eliminating bureaucracy. While many teams finalized their changes back in October, others have only just completed this process now."
The layoffs will affect approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon, and the company is committed to supporting all affected employees.
The job reductions will begin with offering most U.S.-based employees a 90-day period to seek new internal positions (timing will vary internationally based on local regulations).
For those who do not find a new role at Amazon or opt not to search for one, "we will provide transition support that includes severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits (as applicable), and more," stated Amazon.
The company affirmed that it will continue recruitment and investment in strategic areas crucial for its future growth.
"We are just at the beginning stages of expanding all our businesses, and there are substantial opportunities ahead," Galetti remarked.
This announcement follows the company's previous reduction of 14,000 roles.
"Some may wonder if this is the onset of a new pattern where we announce extensive layoffs every few months. That is not our intention. However, as we have always done, each team will keep evaluating ownership, speed, and capacity to innovate for customers, making adjustments as necessary," Amazon noted.
