New Delhi, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, announced on Sunday that the Union Budget for the present financial year has unveiled significant measures targeted at enhancing the production and usage of rare earth metals while promoting electric vehicles.
The Union Minister emphasized that the Budget strongly supports the development of EV batteries and electric mobility, with a continuation of the customs duty exemption for battery manufacturing.
Furthermore, the extension of the exemption from Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on capital goods utilized in the production of lithium-ion cells has been introduced to bolster battery manufacturing and the EV supply chain, he noted.
Additionally, he highlighted that an exemption from Basic Customs Duty has also been granted on the import of sodium antimonate, which is essential for producing solar glass.
“This initiative aims to enhance domestic solar manufacturing and support the supply chains for EV and renewable energy,” he explained.
Kumaraswamy pointed out that the ambitious initiative to extract and utilize rare earth minerals has progressed significantly, with the Budget announcing the formation of rare earth corridors in Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
He stated that these corridors will be developed as part of the ongoing Rs 7,280-crore project approved by the Union Cabinet under the Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM) scheme.
“Concerning the Ministry of Steel, the Budget has focused on enhancing sustainability within the steel sector and achieving net zero carbon emissions,” he said.
Kumaraswamy revealed that a proposed investment of Rs 20,000 crore has been allocated for initiatives aimed at carbon mitigation in high-emission sectors such as steel, cement, and refineries.
This initiative will facilitate the adoption of advanced technologies to lower carbon emissions while ensuring that India’s crucial industries remain both globally competitive and environmentally conscious.
Reflecting on the Union Budget, V. Sunil Kumar, BJP MLA and former minister in Karnataka, remarked that the Budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is favorable for the overall progress of the nation, including Karnataka.
“By focusing on IT innovation, expanding tourism, enhancing inland water connectivity, high-speed rail, MSMEs, and the services sector, this Budget has established a solid foundation for a future-ready Karnataka,” he stated.
The former minister added that by prioritizing various sectors of the economy, support has been extended for the advancement of tourism, agriculture, horticulture, MSMEs, infrastructure, and economic corridors.
