New Delhi, Oct 17 (NationPress) The economy of Chhattisgarh is poised for a significant uplift due to the recent adjustments in GST, which have lowered rates on vital sectors such as handlooms, handicrafts, cement, and packaged dairy, as reported by official data on Friday.
The reduction in tax rates is leading to decreased input costs, fostering consumer demand, and enhancing the competitiveness of local products in both national and international markets, according to a statement from officials.
The new 5 percent GST rate on these key sectors is expected to alleviate the financial strain on small producers, stimulate formalisation, and promote rural entrepreneurship. This aligns perfectly with the state’s developmental goals and vision for inclusive growth, the release added.
It is estimated that around 1.5 lakh handloom weavers, many of whom are women involved in decentralized rural production across districts like Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh, Raipur, Mahasamund, Bastar, and Sarguja, will benefit from these GST reforms.
According to government data, these cuts could potentially boost demand for handicrafts by 10-15 percent and create around 5,000 new jobs by 2026.
The GST reduction on cement from 28 percent to 18 percent will make it more affordable, thereby decreasing construction expenses, increasing housing demand, and generating additional job opportunities in the infrastructure sector, impacting between 20,000 to 30,000 jobs.
Furthermore, the reforms are anticipated to benefit between 50,000 to 60,000 artisans engaged in handicrafts throughout Chhattisgarh, with tribal and forest-based crafts comprising approximately 70-80 percent of this workforce.
Additionally, these reforms are a boon for MSMEs in the powerloom sector, as they alleviate the input tax burden, rectify inverted duties, support working capital, and promote formalization.
The reduction of GST from 12 percent to 5 percent significantly enhances the metal handicraft sector by lowering production costs, boosting sales, and facilitating exports.
This reform provides much-needed financial relief to tribal artisans, making their crafts economically sustainable once more while preserving traditional skills that were facing challenges due to higher tax rates, the release concluded.
