New Delhi, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has declared that Terminal 2 (T2) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will be temporarily closed for a period of four to five months beginning in April. This closure is part of a comprehensive refurbishment initiative designed to modernize the terminal in response to the increasing demands of domestic air travel.

Established over 40 years ago by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), T2 will undergo an extensive upgrade, spearheaded by DIAL. The refurbishment will feature the installation of India’s first autonomous docking aerobridges, new ceilings with skylights, improved flooring, and enhanced road connectivity. These enhancements aim to enrich the passenger experience and ensure that T2 remains a world-class facility capable of managing rising traffic. The terminal is expected to reach full capacity by FY 2025-26.

During T2's closure, flight operations will transition to Terminal 1 (T1), which is also undergoing restoration. The T1 refurbishment project is nearing its conclusion, with plans for reopening by March 15, 2025, pending necessary approvals. T1’s capacity of 40 million passengers will be expanded to accommodate an additional 15 million typically served by T2 during this timeframe.

The modernization program at IGIA also encompasses upgrades to one of the airport’s runways, which will be temporarily closed for enhancements, according to officials. The runway improvement will include the implementation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS), rendering the runway CAT III B compliant. This upgrade will facilitate flight operations even during low-visibility conditions, such as the foggy winter months common to Delhi, officials state.

As part of the airport's approach to manage escalating passenger traffic, a segment of Terminal 3 (T3) currently designated for domestic operations will be transformed into an international terminal, as per reports.

At present, T1 accommodates 40 million passengers annually, T2 manages 15 million, and T3 serves both domestic and international flights. Initially designed for 34 million international passengers, T3 now accommodates around 45 million, surpassing its intended capacity.
