Stanlow (UK), Jan 14 (NationPress) - Essar Energy Transition is excited to share that 2025 has been a monumental year for the Stanlow refinery located in Ellesmere Port, Liverpool. Following a year of transformative investments, the company has reached its highest-ever domestic sales since it was acquired by Essar in 2011, solidifying its role as a key player in the UK’s energy security.

This growth underscores the persistent strong demand for refined products in the UK and the pivotal role of the refining sector.

2025: A Pivotal Year for Domestic Supply

Despite the challenges associated with a significant infrastructure transition, 2025 proved to be a record-setting year for Essar Energy Transition. The company effectively utilized its comprehensive supply infrastructure to expand its market share and provide exceptional value to its customers.

Operational throughput witnessed a remarkable increase, with volumes rising by 8 percent compared to 2024. This surge is particularly evident at the refinery gantry, where dispatch volumes are nearing record levels, showcasing the efficiency and reliability of the Stanlow facility.

Strategic Growth in Retail and Aviation

The outstanding performance in 2025 was further supported by growth across all operational segments:

Retail Expansion: The retail forecourt division continues to flourish, with the number of Essar-branded retail sites increasing to 58, enhancing coverage and brand visibility. In addition to these branded locations, Essar Energy Transition is now supplying fuel to more than 100 dealer-owned forecourts throughout the UK. The company successfully initiated a “price drop” campaign in early December for its company-leased, dealer-operated sites, driving substantial consumer interest.

Aviation Excellence: Essar Energy Transition has considerably expanded its airport network, now supplying fuel to 10 major airports directly.

Supply Resilience: Beyond Stanlow, the company has fortified UK fuel security through strategic supply points at Kingsbury, Northampton, Grangemouth, Oikos, and Grays. This extensive distribution network was crucial in 2025, enabling the company to promptly address urgent supply needs from the rail, bus, and commercial transport sectors, especially following the closure of two of the UK’s six refineries.

Decarbonising for the Future

Notable achievements also include a substantial $100 million investment in a significant refinery ‘turnaround’, one of the largest and most intricate in Stanlow’s history. As part of a $350 million investment programme for improvement projects, this initiative not only maintained operations but also transformed the refinery. The turnaround resulted in an estimated 8 percent increase in throughput capacity and introduced the UK’s first hydrogen-ready furnace, marking a crucial advancement in the refinery’s decarbonisation strategy.

The Importance of a Robust Domestic Sector and the Need for CBAM

The achievements of 2025 emphasize the vital importance of a flourishing domestic refining sector. To ensure the long-term viability of this critical industry, Essar Energy Transition continues to promote the inclusion of refining in the UK’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This would safeguard industry competitiveness and shield the UK from high-carbon imports.
