Essar Energy Transition report: £1.9bn GVA and 10,000 jobs by 2035
Essar Energy Transition on Monday, 12 May 2025, published its maiden In-Country Value Overview Report, laying out the company's contribution to the UK economy, energy resilience, and industrial decarbonisation. The independent report, prepared by FGE NexantECA, projects that Essar's transition into a low-carbon energy hub will deliver £1.9 billion in annual Gross Value Added (GVA) to the UK economy and support nearly 10,000 long-term jobs by 2035.
Stanlow's Role in UK Energy Security
As one of only four remaining UK refineries, Stanlow is already a cornerstone of national energy security. The facility currently supplies 18 per cent of the UK's road transport fuel and 12.5 per cent of all UK jet fuel demand — rising to 25 per cent of jet fuel demand from airports outside of Heathrow. It also supports 50 per cent of the UK's inorganic chemicals industry with critical feedstocks, a sector integral to British manufacturing.
In 2025, Essar Energy Transition collected £4.2 billion in VAT and fuel duty, representing 0.7 per cent of all UK VAT receipts and 13 per cent of all fuel duty receipts — underscoring its significance as a fiscal asset to the Treasury.
Jobs and Economic Contribution Today
Essar Energy Transition supported 4,917 direct, indirect, and induced jobs in 2025, with average salaries for direct employees standing at double the national average. The company's supply chain spend reached £471 million, of which £426 million was directed to UK suppliers, with 40 per cent of orders placed within the North West.
