Force Motors on Wednesday, 17 June marked a landmark in Indo-German industrial collaboration, rolling out the 200,000th Mercedes-Benz engine from its precision manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. The milestone engine — a six-cylinder M256 unit — has been fitted in a Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, and comes nearly three decades after the two companies first joined hands in 1997.

A Partnership Built Over Three Decades

The Force Motors–Mercedes-Benz manufacturing relationship began in 1997 and has since expanded well beyond its original scope. Today, Force Motors manufactures engines and axles for all Mercedes-Benz cars and SUVs assembled in India, adhering to the German automaker's stringent global quality benchmarks. Industry observers describe it as one of the most enduring and successful examples of Indo-German industrial cooperation.

The partnership has helped elevate the standards of automotive manufacturing in India, demonstrating that the country can deliver engineering quality competitive with global benchmarks — a point underscored by the sheer volume now crossing the 2 lakh engine mark.

The roll-out aligns directly with the government's Make in India programme, which seeks to position the country as a preferred destination for high-precision, technology-intensive industrial production. Prasan Firodia, speaking at the event, said the milestone 'reflects a partnership built on trust, precision and a shared commitment to manufacturing excellence.' He added that Force Motors 'remains committed to supporting its (Mercedes-Benz's) growth through best-in-class manufacturing and contributing to the production of world-class automotive components in India.'

Senior executives from Mercedes-Benz India were also present, including Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer and Executive Director and Head of Operations Vyankatesh Kulkarni, signalling the strategic importance both sides attach to the partnership.

The Chakan facility's output is a concrete data point in a broader story: India is steadily moving up the automotive value chain.
