Gadkari clears ₹1,427 crore Thiruvarur Bypass on NH-83 in Tamil Nadu
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday, 26 May approved the construction of a 4-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83 in Tamil Nadu, at a total outlay of ₹1,427.61 crore. The project, spanning 14.9 km, also covers the construction of two additional Road Over Bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Project Alignment and Key Locations
The bypass originates at Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai and passes through several localities including Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi, and Anaivadapathy Colony, among others. The alignment will also improve access to SH-23, SH-65, and the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, integrating religious tourism into the infrastructure corridor.
What the Bypass Will Deliver
Once operational, the bypass is expected to significantly decongest Thiruvarur town, reduce travel time by approximately 15 minutes, and improve road safety by diverting traffic away from densely populated and commercial zones. 'Once completed, it will significantly decongest Thiruvarur town, reduce travel time by approximately 15 minutes, and enhance road safety by diverting traffic away from densely populated and commercial areas,' Gadkari said in a post on X.
The project is also positioned as a strategic connectivity upgrade, linking key industrial hubs such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore with the port towns of Karaikal and Nagapattinam, with direct implications for regional freight movement and economic activity.
Gadkari Reviews NH Projects in Punjab, Delhi, and Haryana
Separately, Gadkari on Tuesday reviewed the quality and maintenance progress of National Highway projects covering 4,335 km in Punjab and 3,332 km in Delhi and Haryana, drawing on inputs from media and social media platforms. He directed officials and contractors to strengthen coordination and adhere strictly to project timelines.
The minister stressed the adoption of modern construction technologies and best engineering practices to enhance the durability and long-term performance of national highways. He also instructed agencies to proactively address waterlogging, erosion, and other weather-related disruptions to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement.
Broader Infrastructure Push
This approval is part of a wider pattern of highway investment across southern and northern India under the current administration. Tamil Nadu has seen a steady pipeline of National Highway upgrades in recent years, with port connectivity and industrial corridor development as recurring priorities. The Thiruvarur bypass, notably, also serves as a last-mile link to coastal economic zones, underlining the Centre's intent to integrate infrastructure with trade logistics.
