PM Gati Shakti clears 396 infra projects worth ₹18.66 lakh crore
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
PM Gati Shakti, the Centre's integrated infrastructure planning initiative, has evaluated 396 projects with a combined estimated outlay of ₹18.66 lakh crore through its Network Planning Group (NPG) mechanism, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Of these, 256 projects have been sanctioned and 198 projects are currently under implementation.
Sectors Covered
The projects span a wide range of critical infrastructure sectors, including highways, railways, power, ports, civil aviation, and telecommunications. The initiative operates on a 'Whole of Government' approach, bringing together 58 Central Ministries and all 36 states and Union Territories on a single integrated planning platform to ensure coordinated execution.
Impact on Logistics and Economy
A 2025 assessment by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), conducted in collaboration with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), estimates India's logistics cost at 7.9 per cent of GDP — a level described as being on par with advanced economies globally. The Economic Survey 2023-24 noted that integrated planning measures under Gati Shakti have improved domestic manufacturing and export competitiveness.
A separate study by the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) found that every ₹1 spent on National Highway development generates a ₹3.2 increase in GDP — underlining the multiplier effect of infrastructure investment.
Platform Expansion and Public Access
The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP) public platform was launched in September 2025, opening access to data analytics for private entities and the general public through a query-based mechanism. To date, approximately 1,800 data layers have been integrated into the platform, alongside over 65 software modules and more than 100 mobile applications developed for stakeholder use.
States have also been encouraged to extend the platform's use to district-level planning, broadening the initiative's reach beyond major national corridors.
Broader Policy Context
PM Gati Shakti forms part of a wider set of logistics and connectivity reforms that include the National Logistics Policy, PRAGATI, Sagarmala, dedicated rail freight corridors, and industrial corridor development. According to government assessments, these combined initiatives have improved logistics efficiency, reduced turnaround time, and eased the cost of doing business across India. With nearly half of evaluated projects still awaiting sanction, the pace of approvals will be a key indicator of execution momentum in the months ahead.
