Is the Government Mandating Labels for AI-Generated Deepfakes?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) In response to the growing prevalence of AI-generated deepfake content, the Ministry of Information Technology released updated guidelines on Tuesday for social media intermediaries, including platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. These directives mandate that all AI-produced content is clearly labeled and embedded with identifiers.
The government has established a three-hour timeframe for these platforms to remove flagged AI-generated or deepfake content upon notification from the government or a court order.
The official guidelines also prohibit digital platforms from hiding or removing AI labels or associated metadata once they have been applied.
According to the MeitY order, social media companies must implement automated tools to detect and curb the distribution of illegal, sexually exploitative, or misleading AI content.
"Social media intermediaries must periodically inform their users, at least once every three months, in a clear and effective manner through their rules, privacy policies, or any appropriate means," about the repercussions associated with AI misuse.
If an intermediary becomes aware of any infringement concerning the creation, generation, modification, hosting, or sharing of synthetic information, it is required to take prompt and appropriate actions.
The updated guidelines require social media platforms to apply suitable technical measures, including automated tools, to prevent users from creating or disseminating synthetically generated content that violates existing laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
The draft rules aim to enforce disclosure by users when posting AI-generated or modified content and require platforms to utilize technology to validate such declarations.
Many social media platforms have already introduced features that allow users to label content as being generated or altered through artificial intelligence.
