Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to travel to the United States later this month to attend the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting and hold bilateral discussions on the ongoing India-US trade deal negotiations, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed on Wednesday, 2 September. The announcement signals fresh momentum in what has been a protracted effort to finalise a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement between the world's largest democracy and its largest economy.

Gor made the disclosure while speaking at the 66th Annual Session of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) in New Delhi. He described the bilateral relationship as active and productive, noting that both governments have made 'significant progress' in negotiations. 'The United States and India are working very closely together; a lot is happening,' Gor said, adding that Washington looks forward to hosting Goyal for the G20 meetings.

The ambassador also stressed that the two sides are committed to building a trade relationship that is, in his words, 'fair, reciprocal and mutually beneficial' — language that reflects Washington's longstanding insistence on market access and tariff reciprocity as preconditions for any deal.

Goyal's trip is expected towards the end of September, according to earlier reports, as the US hosts the G20 Trade Ministers' talks.
