India-EU Trade and Technology Council: Goyal, Jaishankar, Vaishnaw to visit Brussels
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw will travel to Brussels for the India-European Union Trade and Technology Council (TTC) dialogue, Goyal confirmed on Saturday, 4 July. The ministerial visit is designed to complement and facilitate the implementation of the recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
What the TTC Visit Aims to Achieve
Speaking on the sidelines of the 17th Toy Biz International B2B Expo in New Delhi, Goyal said the delegation will meet with the European Commission. 'Our effort is that it becomes a supplement to the free trade agreement which we have finalised and will help us to smooth the edges and make it easier to implement and benefit from the FTA going forward,' he said.
The TTC dialogue is expected to deepen India-EU cooperation across trade, technology, and resilient supply chains — three pillars that have gained strategic urgency as both sides look to diversify dependencies in a fragmented global economy.
India-Canada FTA Talks Progressing
On other trade fronts, Goyal said negotiations on the proposed India-Canada Free Trade Agreement are advancing, with an Indian negotiating team scheduled to depart for Canada on Monday. 'We are trying to conclude it in the next six months,' he said. The India-Canada trade relationship had faced turbulence in recent years, making the renewed momentum notable.
Peru FTA Unlikely Soon; Israel Talks Slower
Goyal indicated that the proposed FTA with Peru is unlikely to be finalised in the near term, citing Indian concerns over market access for several product categories. On the proposed trade pact with Israel, he said negotiations are continuing despite the ongoing conflict in West Asia, though at a slower pace. He expressed hope that talks would gain momentum once the regional situation stabilises.
Toy Sector: 10x Export Target in Four Years
Addressing industry representatives at the expo, Goyal urged domestic toy manufacturers to leverage expanding global market access and target a 10-fold increase in exports over the next four years. He assured the industry that the government will not dilute mandatory quality standards, signalling that export ambition will not come at the cost of product safety benchmarks.
