New Delhi, Sep 15 (NationPress) The 14th round of talks for a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union is scheduled to take place in Brussels from October 6 to 10, as confirmed by officials from the Commerce Ministry.

Both parties are dedicated to reaching a deal that is equitable and benefits both sides.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that while it may not be feasible to find consensus on every matter, he is optimistic that the result will be a “very good agreement.”

“The teams from India and the EU are currently engaged in vigorous negotiations for the FTA,” remarked the Union Minister.

He further mentioned that negotiators are actively working to bridge the differences.

The previous round of discussions, the 13th, was held in India from September 8 to 12. During that session, EU Vice President Maros Sefcovic and Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen met with Goyal to assess the progress of the negotiations.

A significant request from the EU is for duty concessions in the auto sector, where India currently imposes import duties exceeding 100% on vehicles.

Recently, India accepted similar concessions for UK auto manufacturers under a trade agreement signed in May. The EU anticipates a comparable arrangement to enhance market access for its enterprises.

Several European automotive giants, including Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, have established manufacturing plants in India.

The EU has emphasized that the collaboration transcends trade, aiming for high-value investments that will generate thousands of new jobs in India.

As negotiations are set to resume in Brussels next month, both parties are striving to resolve differences and advance toward a long-awaited FTA that could significantly fortify India-EU economic relations.

Point of View

It is imperative to recognize the mutual benefits that a well-structured agreement could bring to both India and the EU. As discussions unfold, the focus should remain on achieving a balanced deal that promotes economic growth and job creation, thereby strengthening ties between two significant global players.
