New Delhi, Oct 6 (NationPress) India and the European Union are set to initiate the 14th round of discussions regarding the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in Brussels today, as confirmed by senior officials.
This new series of negotiations will unfold over the course of five days. Following this, there will be an additional meeting between Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and his EU counterpart Maros Sefcovic in South Africa, coinciding with the G20 trade commissioners’ summit.
The anticipated India-EU FTA encompasses 23 distinct policy areas, or chapters, with at least two – market access and rules of origin – still pending resolution.
EU Ambassador Hervé Delphin remarked on Saturday that both India and the EU should leverage the FTA to enhance bilateral trade and investment, particularly at a time when “certain countries” are increasing tariffs or restricting market access, subtly referring to the US.
“The FTA represents an opportunity for both EU and Indian enterprises, allowing for a substantial boost in our bilateral trade and investment. As other nations impose tariffs or limit their markets, we should utilize the FTA to diversify trade, mitigate uncertainties, and fortify our supply chains,” he stated.
He pointed out that EU President Ursula von der Leyen and PM Modi have set a goal to finalize the FTA by the end of this year. The negotiating teams are diligently working towards this target, although it is acknowledged that the negotiations are complex and critical issues remain unresolved.
“The EU is prepared to finalize a meaningful agreement. We eagerly anticipate the next round and further discussions aimed at achieving a mutually advantageous deal,” Delphin emphasized.
Delphin also noted that the EU stands as India’s primary trading partner, with a bilateral goods trade valued at EUR 120 billion, surpassing both the US and China.
“When services are included, our bilateral trade has surged to EUR 180 billion. While this is a remarkable figure, there exists significant potential for growth, given that the EU and India are the second and fourth-largest economies globally. To unlock this potential, the EU and India are actively negotiating the FTA,” he added.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated, “We remain dedicated to establishing a balanced and mutually beneficial FTA, creating new opportunities for businesses and maximizing shared growth between India and the EU.”
