Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that India's remarkable growth trajectory is being shaped by resilience, continuous learning, and the resolve to move beyond setbacks. Speaking at the India Global Forum's UK-India Week 2026 in London, Goyal drew on personal experience to illustrate how adversity can serve as a catalyst for both individual and national progress.

The Personal Anecdote Behind the Message

Reflecting on his early academic journey as a chartered accountancy student, Goyal recalled a period of deep disappointment after scoring unexpectedly low marks in law — despite having previously secured the second rank in law at Bombay University. Unhappy with the results, he travelled to Delhi to seek a review of his examination marks.

He spent an entire day with former Institute president K.G. Somani, who persuaded him that rankings and examination results do not define a person's future. According to Goyal, Somani told him that success in life does not depend on standing first or second in an examination, and that his future path was unlikely to be determined by those rankings.

Lessons From Setbacks

Goyal said he eventually came to recognise the setback as carrying an important lesson — one that helped shape his broader outlook toward life and success. He noted that youthful ambitions often place excessive importance on rankings and achievements, but that life gradually teaches individuals to accept challenges and press forward.

He added that experiences, setbacks, and interactions with people from diverse backgrounds contribute significantly to personal growth. Drawing a light parallel with everyday life, Goyal remarked that some things cannot always be planned or controlled — much like traffic conditions in cities such as London and Bengaluru, which remain unpredictable.
