India auto wholesales hit record August 2026 high; PV sales surge 36.5%
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's automobile wholesales across passenger vehicles (PVs), three-wheelers (3Ws), and two-wheelers (2Ws) scaled their highest-ever levels for the month of August in 2026, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. The record performance was driven by a supportive demand environment and a comparatively lower base from August 2025.
Segment-wise Sales Figures
Passenger vehicle wholesales climbed 36.5 per cent year-on-year to 4,39,309 units in August 2026 — the strongest August figure on record for the segment. Three-wheeler dispatches rose 22.8 per cent to 93,764 units, while two-wheeler sales expanded 10.5 per cent to 20,34,698 units during the same period.
Total production across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles reached 31,57,822 units in August 2026, according to SIAM data.
What SIAM Said
Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, described the industry as being in a 'robust growth phase', attributing August's performance in part to a lower base from the previous year. 'India's automobile industry is passing through a robust growth phase. The growth in August 2026 has been supported by a lower base from the previous year,' Menon said.
Menon added that the broader demand environment remained 'fundamentally healthy', supported by strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, and improving financing conditions across vehicle categories. He also pointed to the accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains — including electric vehicles — as a structural tailwind for the industry ecosystem.
Looking ahead, Menon signalled further momentum: 'Festive demand is also expected to provide an additional boost, resulting in healthy Q2 numbers,' he added.
Context: Back-to-Back Monthly Records
The August milestone follows an equally strong performance in July 2026, when India's automobile industry recorded its strongest-ever July sales. Domestic PV dispatches rose 34.3 per cent year-on-year to 4,57,810 units in July, compared with 3,40,772 units in July 2025. Two-wheeler sales jumped 22.6 per cent to 19,23,483 units, while three-wheeler dispatches surged 33.4 per cent to 92,560 units against 69,403 units in July 2025.
This marks consecutive months of record-breaking volumes for India's automobile sector — a pattern not seen in recent years — suggesting the current upcycle may be more structural than seasonal.
Why This Matters
The automobile sector is one of India's largest industrial contributors, accounting for a significant share of manufacturing GDP, employment, and indirect tax revenues. Record wholesale volumes across multiple segments simultaneously indicate broad-based demand recovery rather than concentration in a single category. Notably, two-wheeler growth — often a proxy for rural and semi-urban consumption — also remains solidly positive, reinforcing SIAM's assessment of a healthy rural demand environment.
With the festive season from October onwards expected to inject additional demand, analysts will be closely watching whether retail offtake keeps pace with wholesale dispatches — a key indicator of inventory health at the dealer level.
