New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) The sales of domestic passenger vehicles surged by 12.6 percent on a year-over-year basis, reaching 449,616 units in January 2026, compared to 399,386 units in January 2025, as per data shared by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Friday.
The overall sales for passenger vehicles, along with three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles, totaled 2,927,394 units in January.
The three-wheeler segment experienced robust growth, jumping by 30.2 percent from the previous year, with sales hitting 75,725 units, an increase from 58,167 units in the same month last year.
“January 2026 marked the highest sales figures ever recorded for passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers, showcasing double-digit growth against January 2025,” remarked Rajesh Menon, director general of SIAM.
The new year has commenced on a strong note, continuing the momentum observed in the preceding quarter, bolstered by sustained demand following the GST rate reduction.
“The initiatives outlined in the Union Budget 2026 to bolster India’s manufacturing capabilities, along with favorable existing policies, are anticipated to yield long-term advantages for the sector and foster medium-term growth,” Menon added.
In the two-wheeler category, scooter sales saw an impressive rise of 36.9 percent year-on-year, totaling 750,580 units, compared to 548,201 units from the previous year.
Motorcycle sales also climbed by 20.3 percent year-on-year, with 1,126,416 units sold compared to 936,145 units last year. Furthermore, moped sales increased by 16.1 percent to 48,607 units, up from 41,872 units in the same timeframe last year.
In the three-wheeler sector, passenger vehicle sales rose by 30.4 percent to 60,881 units, compared to 46,674 units the previous year.
Sales of transport vehicles grew by 33.4 percent, reaching 13,374 units compared to 10,029 units in the same period last year.
However, e-rickshaw sales saw a decline of 7.9 percent, totaling 925 units, down from 1,004 units previously.
