Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) India has made significant strides from being a predominant importer of military equipment to evolving into a key manufacturer and exporter across various platforms, stated Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday.
During a meeting with the trainee officers of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS)-2025 Batch at South Block, the minister expressed the government’s commitment to enhancing the capacity of the indigenous defence industry for local production and exports, under the initiative of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. He emphasized the vital role that Indian diplomats play in achieving this vision.
Rajnath Singh noted that the global community is attentively observing India’s progress and looking to it for leadership.
As per a statement from the Defence Ministry, the minister urged the officers to approach their work with honesty and integrity to further bolster India’s positive global image.
He reminded them that while serving abroad, they embody the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians.
Singh encouraged the officers to be receptive to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives, carrying forward the values embedded in India’s rich civilizational heritage. He also commended them on their hard work in securing a position in the prestigious IFS.
The trainee officers received briefings on various defence diplomacy initiatives, the defence budget, tri-service integration, and defence acquisitions from officials within the Ministry of Defence.
In a related announcement, the government revealed a defence allocation of Rs 7.8 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2026-27, marking a 15 percent increase from the previous year’s Rs 6.81 lakh crore.
The budget includes Rs 2.19 lakh crore for military hardware acquisitions, reflecting a 21.8 percent increase compared to last year's allocation of Rs 1.80 lakh crore.
This increased budget comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor and the evolving geopolitical scenario, aligning with the government’s push for a self-reliant India through support for indigenous research and manufacturing.
