India Expands LPG Sourcing to Global Markets, Including the US
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) In a strategic move, India has begun to procure LPG from various global sources, including the United States, to enhance its supply chain amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The government reassured on Tuesday that there are no 'dry outs' at any LPG distributor, ensuring that supplies remain uninterrupted throughout the nation.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, stated during an inter-ministerial briefing that the majority of LPG supplies continue to flow from the Gulf region.
Sharma elaborated, "Our Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are now importing LPG from the US. The government is making every effort to broaden the sources of LPG supply," adding that there has been an increase in crude oil acquisition due to this diversification.
Furthermore, commercial LPG supplies have partially resumed as states begin to restore distribution.
In an effort to mitigate the pressure on domestic LPG demand, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal have been activated.
Sharma pointed out that the surge in panic-driven demand is beginning to decrease. "We’ve observed a drop in panic bookings, from 89 lakh on March 13 to 70 lakh today," she reported.
The rate for LPG refills remains consistent with levels prior to the conflict, with a call for consumers to refrain from hoarding and avoid engaging in black-market transactions.
According to the ministry, fuel availability is stable, with refineries operating at full capacity and adequate stocks of petrol and diesel.
“No LPG distributor is facing a shortage, and consumer supply remains steady,” Sharma affirmed. Additionally, a strong push towards digital platforms has enhanced booking efficiency.
On a related note, the Indian-flagged LPG tanker 'Nanda Devi' arrived at Vadinar Port in Gujarat on Tuesday. This marks the second LPG carrier to reach the west coast this week, following the arrival of 'Shivalik' at Mundra Port the previous day.
Both vessels are delivering essential LPG supplies to India after navigating a particularly challenging route through the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic has been affected due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel.
The arrival of Nanda Devi at Kandla is part of broader diplomatic and logistical strategies, including negotiations with regional authorities and coordination with naval assets to ensure the safety of merchant vessels.
