New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) The government announced on Friday that there will be no increase in the price of standard petrol for consumers, with the price hike confined to the premium fuel segment, which constitutes only 3-4% of overall petrol sales.

During a daily press briefing, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, clarified that petrol and diesel prices are deregulated and set by oil marketing companies (OMCs).

OMCs have raised the price of premium petrol by over Rs 2 per litre with immediate effect due to rising global crude oil prices stemming from heightened tensions in West Asia. However, prices for regular petrol remain unchanged for now.

Sharma also emphasized that domestic LPG supplies are stable, with no reported shortages, as production levels have been increased.

Nevertheless, she acknowledged that India's energy situation is "not self-sufficient" and still heavily relies on imports.

To alleviate the demand on LPG, over 13,700 PNG connections have been established. "Panic bookings have decreased, and in the past week, we supplied 11,300 tonnes of commercial LPG to customers," she stated.

"Approximately 7,500 users have transitioned from LPG to PNG. The ongoing war situation is concerning, but no shortages have been reported among our distributors. Panic booking has significantly decreased, with about 55 lakh refill requests received yesterday," Sharma added.

The government is making concerted efforts to secure LPG supplies and is actively seeking to expand its sources to ensure stability. She urged state governments to enhance monitoring and enforcement systems for smooth distribution.

When asked about the possibility of India purchasing Iranian oil following recent comments from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about "unsanctioning" Iranian oil at sea, Sharma remarked that it is currently "difficult to provide an answer."

In the meantime, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, reported that there have been no maritime incidents in the last 24 hours, with all 22 Indian vessels and their crew remaining safe near the Strait of Hormuz.

Point of View

The government's commitment to maintaining stable petrol prices while addressing LPG supply concerns represents a balanced approach to energy management. This strategy underscores the importance of securing domestic energy resources amid global uncertainties.
