New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) India is on the verge of introducing its own safe and secure indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) model within a span of six months at an affordable cost, as stated by Union Minister for Railways and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Thursday.
This initiative is a timely response, reinforcing India's status as a trusted nation, which will facilitate the country in becoming a more reliable technological hub for ethical AI solutions in the future, the minister informed the media.
Supported by an advanced common computing facility, the IndiaAI mission is progressing towards tailoring indigenous AI solutions that cater to the local context and utilize Indian languages.
A team of scientists, researchers, developers, and coders are actively engaged in developing multiple foundational models. Given the current momentum, the Union Minister expressed optimism that the Indian AI model will be ready within six months.
This AI model will initially operate with a computing facility consisting of approximately 10,000 GPUs. Soon, an additional 8,693 GPUs will be incorporated. This will primarily benefit researchers, students, and developers at the outset.
The government plans to offer usage at less than Rs 100 per GPU after a 40% subsidy on the cost.
In comparison to global models priced at $2.5 to $3 per hour, India's AI model will be available for under Rs 100 per hour following the subsidy.
Moreover, attractive half-yearly and annual plans will further enhance affordability, as was indicated.
The capacity is approximately nine times that of the open-source model DeepSeek from China and about two-thirds of what ChatGPT offers.
The government prioritizes the ethical deployment and safety of this AI model. To demonstrate this commitment, the Union Minister announced the establishment of an AI Safety Institute, employing a techno-legal framework.
This Indian AI model aims to foster innovation and develop citizen-centric governance tools, along with numerous industrial applications, harnessing technological benefits for the broader populace.
Over the past 18 months, India has been diligently constructing a robust AI ecosystem framework to bolster its foundational AI model.
