New Delhi, June 19 (NationPress) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reiterated India’s dedication to evolving the free trade agreement (FTA) from a negotiated framework into a groundbreaking economic partnership, as stated by the ministry on Thursday.
The minister highlighted India’s strategic global vision and economic leadership during the India Global Forum (IGF) 2025 in London. His trip was significant, coming after the historic signing of the India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in May 2025.
While delivering the keynote address, the Union Minister characterized the FTA as a manifestation of mutual aspirations between two dynamic democracies. He emphasized that the agreement not only boosts bilateral trade but also showcases India’s capability to craft balanced and forward-thinking trade frameworks that align with its national interests.
Goyal was accompanied by UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, with moderation by international journalist Mark Barton.
Detailing the next steps for implementation, Goyal pointed out essential priorities such as enhancing institutional frameworks for joint governance, unlocking initial advantages for SMEs and startups, and ensuring seamless mobility of skilled professionals across various sectors.
On June 19, the Union Minister took part in a special session titled “UK–India Science, Technology and Innovation Collaboration” at the Science Museum in London.
The session delved into opportunities for UK participants to engage in India’s growing investments in digital public infrastructure, sustainable manufacturing, and green technologies.
Discussions also encompassed initiatives aimed at establishing India as a global manufacturing center through Make in India, PLI schemes, and strengthening collaboration in sectors like fintech, artificial intelligence, and creative industries, according to the ministry.
The FTA's significance in enhancing cooperation in vital technologies, defense production, and advanced manufacturing was also emphasized. The session further analyzed how innovations like UPI and CoWIN could be scaled globally through bilateral partnerships.
“Utilizing the India–UK FTA, both nations aspire to unlock new opportunities in goods, services, technology, and innovation for mutual prosperity,” the ministry stated.
