New Delhi, Feb 19 (NationPress) As of January 31, a total of 28,05,354 companies have been registered in India, with 65 percent (18,17,222) currently active. This marks a 0.14 percent rise in the proportion of active companies compared to December 2024, according to the most recent data from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

On January 31, there were also 5,216 foreign companies registered in India, with 63 percent or 3,281 of these being active.

Among these, private limited companies represent 96 percent of the total number of companies, accounting for 38 percent of the overall paid-up capital. In contrast, public limited companies, while only making up 4 percent of the total, constitute 62 percent of the paid-up capital, as per the Ministry's report.

When analyzed by economic sector, Business Services has the highest proportion of active companies at 27 percent, followed by Manufacturing at 20 percent, and Trading and Community, along with Personal and Social Services, at 13 percent each.

The ministry statement notes, “The Services Sector experienced the greatest increase in the number of active companies, followed by the Industry and Agriculture Sectors. Within the Services Sector, Community, Personal and Social Services showed the most significant growth in active companies.”

A state-wise breakdown of new company registrations indicates that Maharashtra topped with 18 percent (2,998 corporate entities), followed by Uttar Pradesh at 11 percent (1,812 companies), and Delhi at 9 percent (1,503 companies), collectively contributing to a paid-up capital of Rs 194.77 crore.

The data illustrates that Maharashtra leads in the total number of active companies, followed by Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Among Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir noted an increase of 112 companies since December 2024.

The ministry also reported that of the 16 new overseas business entities registered from November 2024 to January 2025, 37.50 percent were based in Delhi, 18.75 percent in Kerala, 12.50 percent in Tamil Nadu, and 6.25 percent each in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana.
