Is India Transforming Public Health Delivery with AI Integration?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) India has significantly revamped its public health delivery system by incorporating AI into a cohesive strategy that addresses specialist shortages and enhances proactive care, according to an official statement released on Friday.
By utilizing AI-enabled tools in the National TB Elimination Programme, National Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme, and Media Disease Surveillance System, the government has enabled non-specialists to conduct advanced screenings, leading to a 27% reduction in adverse TB outcomes and generating over 4,500 outbreak alerts.
This transformation is further reinforced through e-Sanjeevani, which has facilitated 282 million consultations with AI-assisted differential diagnosis, along with the UdyogYantra AI System for monitoring malnutrition, as stated.
A comprehensive ecosystem has been established, encompassing everything from infectious disease management and cancer treatment to the modernization of traditional Ayurvedic medicine and the National One Health Programme.
India is set to host the first international AI summit for the Global South in New Delhi from February 16-20, uniting global leaders, policymakers, technology companies, innovators, and experts.
The summit will focus on AI-centered policy, research, industry developments, and public engagement.
The government claims that AI is bridging gaps in healthcare delivery, enhancing the quality of medical devices, services, and drugs, and rendering healthcare more accessible and affordable. The AI-enabled healthcare ecosystem is facilitating early detection and screening, improving clinical decision support, and enabling remote care.
Notably, in March 2024, the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a comprehensive national-level IndiaAI mission with a budget allocation of Rs 10,371.92 crore aimed at fostering India’s socio-economic development through AI. Initiatives under the IndiaAI Mission are driving innovation in AI-enabled healthcare applications.
“A key aspect of the mission is the IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, which aims to develop, scale, and encourage the adoption of impactful AI solutions to address major national challenges. Advanced and efficient AI-enabled healthcare delivery is among the many significant outcomes of this initiative,” the statement added.
