The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) revealed that electric two-wheelers were the leading segment, with sales hitting 1.28 million units, accounting for 57 percent of total EV sales. Meanwhile, electric three-wheelers (L3 and L5) contributed 0.8 million units, representing 35 percent of the EV market.
Sales for electric four-wheelers reached 175,000 units, with significant growth noted in small and light commercial electric goods carriers, according to the report.
In the broader automobile landscape, India's vehicle registrations totaled 28.2 million in 2025, with two-wheelers making up 72 percent of overall sales.
Passenger four-wheelers surpassed 4.4 million units, along with tractors and agricultural vehicles exceeding 1.06 million units.
Regionally, Uttar Pradesh emerged as the largest EV market, accounting for over 400,000 units, or 18 percent of national EV sales. Maharashtra followed with 266,000 units, or 12 percent, and Karnataka with 200,000 units, or 9 percent.
The industry alliance noted that several smaller states displayed impressive EV-to-ICE (internal combustion engine) ratios, including Delhi at 14 percent and Kerala at 12 percent.
Tripura (18 percent) and Assam (14 percent) also reported strong EV-to-ICE ratios in 2025.
A recent report indicated that India’s EV sector attracted over $1.4 billion in 2025, marking a 27 percent increase compared to 2024.
Electric vehicle manufacturers were the largest beneficiaries of this funding, securing $1.2 billion of the total, with Delhi leading the cities by raising $1.1 billion.
The report projects electric car sales in the PV segment to reach approximately 175,000 units for FY26. EV sales experienced an 83 percent increase in FY24.
Another report highlighted a potential $100 billion export opportunity in auto components as EV sales surged from about 50,000 in 2016 to over 2 million in 2024.
