India's passenger EV market doubles with 102% surge in Q2 2026
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's Electric Passenger Vehicle (EV) market recorded a 102 per cent year-on-year surge in Q2 2026, more than quadrupling the broader passenger vehicle market's 26 per cent growth rate, according to a report released on Thursday, 20 August 2026 by CyberMedia Research (CMR). The sharp acceleration was attributed to an expanded model portfolio, improved availability, and compelling total-cost-of-ownership economics.
What Is Driving EV Adoption
Multiple demand-side forces converged in the quarter. New model launches by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) widened consumer choice, while elevated petrol prices amplified the running-cost advantage of electric vehicles, pulling buyers away from internal combustion engine (ICE) alternatives. CMR forecasts that EVs will account for 7–8 per cent of India's passenger vehicle market by end-2026.
Amit Sharma, Senior Analyst, Smart Mobility Practice at CyberMedia Research, said: 'India's passenger vehicle market is poised for steady growth in H2 2026, supported by the festive season, a strong pipeline of new launches, and sustained demand for SUVs and feature-rich vehicles.'
SUVs and Connected Vehicles Lead the Charge
SUVs captured a commanding 58 per cent market share in the quarter, rising 33 per cent YoY, driven by superior ground clearance, aspirational appeal, and the concentration of advanced technology and safety features in SUV lineups. Connected passenger vehicles grew 60 per cent YoY, with penetration climbing from 34 per cent to 43 per cent, fuelled by demand for over-the-air (OTA) software updates, EV software integration, and expanding 4G/5G infrastructure.
Shipra Sinha, Senior Analyst, Smart Mobility Practice at CyberMedia Research, noted: 'Electrification, safety, and digitalisation are rapidly shifting from niche features to mainstream growth drivers, and connected vehicles are leading this transformation.'
Digital Features Becoming Mass-Market
Passenger vehicles equipped with digital clusters grew 63 per cent YoY, with penetration rising from 35 per cent to 46 per cent, as OEMs pushed the feature into mass-market trims. Digital cockpit penetration reached 38 per cent, up 58 per cent YoY, on rising demand for large touchscreens and integrated infotainment. Vehicles with touchscreen displays grew 45 per cent YoY, while those equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) grew 57 per cent YoY — with Level 2 systems accounting for 88 per cent of ADAS-equipped vehicles.
Market Remains Value-Driven
Despite the technology push, India's passenger vehicle market remains firmly value-oriented. A significant 98 per cent of total volumes are concentrated in the sub-₹30 lakh segment, underscoring that affordability continues to govern purchasing decisions even as feature sets expand. Connected vehicles are projected to capture 40–45 per cent of market share by end-2026, according to CMR's forecast.
With the festive season approaching and a robust new-launch pipeline in place, industry observers expect momentum to hold through the second half of the year.
