Instagram Users Face Widespread Messaging Issues and Chat Theme Loss
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) Users of the widely-used social media platform Instagram encountered significant problems early Wednesday, primarily related to difficulties accessing their DMs and the sudden disappearance of chat themes.
Complaints were shared on Instagram's subreddit and various other social media platforms, with users expressing frustration over their inability to utilize the search function or view their contact list.
“About two hours ago, my messages page was completely blank, despite having numerous messages, and I had received two notifications earlier,” a user mentioned.
“I can't access my messages or contacts on Instagram, the search tool is unresponsive, and scrolling up is impossible! Everything seems to be malfunctioning at the moment,” another user commented. A third user noted that a shared chat theme had disappeared from both their and their friend’s direct messages.
According to outage tracking website Downdetector, there were over 10,000 complaints regarding access issues on the platform, with the surge peaking in the early morning hours.
Downdetector keeps track of outages by compiling status reports from various sources, including user-submitted complaints, which can lead to inaccuracies in the actual number of affected users.
Approximately 71% of the complaints were linked to access issues, while 19% involved server connection problems, and 5% of users reported difficulties accessing their Feed or timeline.
In the United States alone, over 10,000 reports were recorded on Downdetector, while India reported 100 complaints, although there has been a recent uptick.
The UK saw around 170 reports of Instagram-related issues, with the peak occurring at approximately 9:11 AM IST.
In a related note, a study involving more than 8,000 children aged between 10 and 14 found that those spending more than 30 minutes on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are likely to experience a gradual decline in their concentration abilities.
The research tracked children’s average time spent on social media, watching videos, and playing video games, which ranged from about 30 minutes daily for 9-year-olds to 2.5 hours for 13-year-olds.
