Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 8 (NationPress) Shripad Yesso Naik, the Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, has stressed the importance of enhancing workplace safety culture through the regular use of personal protective equipment, ensuring proper shutdown procedures before maintenance tasks, and engaging in continuous capacity-building and training.
Speaking at the 'Lineman Diwas' event hosted by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Naik noted that this day, celebrated during National Safety Week, pays tribute to the commitment of frontline workers in the power sector who guarantee a consistent electricity supply throughout the nation.
He pointed out that the integration of advanced technologies including smart grids, real-time monitoring systems, AI-driven predictive maintenance, and drone inspections can proactively detect faults and significantly reduce risks faced by field workers.
Referring to the theme of the sixth edition of Lineman Diwas — 'Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman' — the minister highlighted the ethos of service, safety, and dignity that characterizes the frontline workforce in the power sector.
'Lineman Diwas' is designed to recognize the relentless dedication and essential services provided by linemen and ground maintenance personnel, whose efforts are vital for ensuring reliable electricity delivery nationwide.
Approximately 250 linemen and supervisors from over 66 state and private power distribution and generation companies, as well as transmission licensees from across India, took part in the event.
The assembly created an opportunity to share experiences, deliberate on operational hurdles in maintaining uninterrupted power supply, and exchange best practices in safety, fostering collaborative learning among attendees, as stated by the Ministry of Power.
Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), noted that during severe weather or natural disasters, while people stay indoors, linemen venture out to restore power and ensure the continuity of electricity supply.
He emphasized that despite the rise in automation within the sector, it is the linemen on the ground who effectively restore systems and maintain network operations. He reiterated that all field personnel should be equipped with standardized safety kits and tools.
