Mumbai, Sep 1 (NationPress) Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (M&M) announced a remarkable 37 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase in tractor exports, reaching 1,916 units in August.

Nonetheless, the company experienced a slight 1 percent year-on-year (YoY) drop in total sales for August, marking its first monthly decline in over three years.

The total sales amounted to 75,901 units last month, a drop from 76,755 units in August 2024.

In the utility vehicle (UV) sector, which features well-known models such as Scorpio, Thar, and XUV700, domestic sales decreased by 9 percent to 39,399 units, down from 43,277 units in the same month last year.

The company adjusted its dealer dispatches in anticipation of a government decision regarding a reduction in consumption tax under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework.

The GST Council is expected to convene later this week to deliberate on what may be the most significant tax reform since the introduction of GST.

Despite the decline in August, Mahindra's SUV sales have increased by 15 percent in the current fiscal year, indicating sustained demand for its latest models.

Industry analysts noted that Mahindra continues to outperform the broader market, which is experiencing a slowdown.

In the farm equipment sector, M&M showcased significant growth. Domestic tractor sales rose by 28 percent year-on-year (YoY) to 26,201 units in August, fueled by above-normal monsoon rains and improved reservoir levels expected to enhance both Kharif and upcoming Rabi crops.

Tractor exports also soared by 37 percent to 1,916 units, as per its regulatory filings.

Addressing future expectations, Veejay Nakra, President – Farm Equipment Business, noted that the forecast for surplus rainfall in September may pose risks for some Kharif harvests but also presents strong prospects for tractor demand during the festive season.

He added that ongoing government support through financing schemes for farmers is anticipated to further stimulate rural demand.

“All these factors, along with continuous government support through financing schemes for farmers, could significantly boost tractor demand during the forthcoming festive season,” Nakra stated.

Point of View

Mahindra & Mahindra's performance, particularly in the tractor export sector, reflects a strong demand for agricultural machinery despite broader market challenges. The company's strategic adjustments in response to potential tax reforms signal a proactive approach to maintain competitiveness. Overall, M&M's resilience is noteworthy, lending credibility to its market position.
